Stop At Stoppleworth's For A Hike

There is a boulder within Stoppleworth Conservation Area - a 55-acre nature preserve in Tolland – that juts out into the surrounding ferns. You can climb to the top of the ledge, plop down and enjoy the peace and solitude or eat a picnic lunch.

Stoppleworth is a place that draws you in as soon as you pass through the split-rail fence from the parking lot. From here, you can take either a right or left on the mile-long, orange-blazed loop trail that goes through the heart of the preserve.

The path takes you past some huge ferns and over several bridges before reaching a "resting" bench in honor of Leland Stoppleworth, the preserve's namesake. From here, the trail twists and turns down through a valley and up another hill, passing several more bridges, including a rare bridge made of huge stones.

There are plenty of rock formations along the way, including impressive ledges and boulders that seemed to have been randomly placed by giants. There are even a few cairns around - those piles of stones made by hikers in the shape of a cone.

The orange trail connects to the white-blazed trail of the 85-acre Campbell's Peaceful Valley where you can climb up ridges and cliffs that were once the size of the Himalayas or rocks that were once part of an ancient coral reef.

For those looking for a longer journey, Peaceful Valley has three blazed trails. A half-mile yellow-blazed loop trail takes you through the forest to a scenic overlook of the surrounding hillsides and Shenipsit Lake, with Hartford in the distance. A half-mile blue-blazed trail traverses through a bog and past rocky outcroppings and cliffs. A short red-blazed trail follows Grant's Brook and through some of the valley's meadows. Going from the crest of the northern hill to the bottom of Peaceful Valley, you traverse a sequence of rocks formed along the coast of North America 420 million years ago.

Mark your calendar for July 10 at 1 p.m. That's when retired University of Connecticut geology professor Tony Philpotts leads a geology walk through Peaceful Valley. Philpotts, who took students to this outdoor geological showcase for years, will explain the natural history and lay of the land. Participants should park at 215 Hunter Road.

Exit 67 off I-84 and follow Route 31 toward Rockville. Take a right onto Route 30. Turn left onto Crystal Lake Road and then right onto Hunter Road. The parcel is directly across from 376 Hunter Road. For maps of the preserves visit http://www.conservingtollandct.org.

  1. Game 2: Steelers answer the Ravens' caw

    Sun reporter
The Ravens may have gotten an answer to their "Why Not Us?" motto. The Pittsburgh Steelers had 397 yards of total offense, and averaged 4.9 yards per carry. They had a nearly 11-minute advantage in time of possession, converted on seven of 11 third-down...

  3. Game 6: Late charge comes up short

    Sun reporter
The debt is still unpaid. Baltimore will have to wait awhile longer to get its revenge on the city of Indianapolis, as its Colts defeated the Ravens, 26-21, last night before a crowd of 56,978 at the RCA Dome. The Ravens (2-4) played perhaps their best...

  5. Game 13: Ravens finally get in the last word

    Sun reporter
It had been five weeks since the Ravens enjoyed this kind of celebration. Tight end Eric Green was taunting his former teammates along the sideline. Bam Morris was adding the latest steps to his Bamarama dance. The Ravens were talking much trash in the...

  7. Game 3: Ravens see errors of ways

    Sun reporter
This one was so ugly that even the coach could not get angry. Players lining up in the wrong formations. Receivers dropping passes. A bad snap on a punt leading to a safety. A return specialist not properly handling kickoffs. And then there was the Vinny...

  9. Game 16: Pointed fingers help lower curtain

    Sun reporter
The frustrations of a losing season were beginning to break through. Only minutes after the Ravens had finished their inaugural season in Baltimore with a 24-21 loss to the Houston Oilers before 52,704 at Memorial Stadium, a couple of their players...

  11. Game 5: D-less day irks Ravens

    Sun reporter
The Ravens complained about the officiating yesterday, but it was an attempt to mask a serious problem, one that may not go away for the rest of the season. While the team more than doubled its season total in penalties in one game, the bottom line to...

  13. Game 7: No defense for 3rd loss in row

    Sun reporter
The Ravens' defense was as thin as the air surrounding Denver's Mile High Stadium yesterday. It began the game without four starters and with a new defensive scheme, and left confused after surrendering 548 yards of total offense and six touchdowns. In...

  15. Bears' rally lacks finishing kick

    Tribune staff reporter
For once this season, the Bears played an inspired second half. Problem was, they trailed by 20 points at halftime Sunday and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers escaped with a 20-17 victory to end their losing streak at five games. Bigger problem was, Kevin...

  17. Ewbank, Donovan and McCormack common threads in shared history

    Sun Staff
Art Donovan? A Cleveland Brown? It happened, in 1951. Donovan spent that summer in the Browns' training camp. Why Cleveland? Baltimore was between franchises in the NFL, and when the old Colts folded after the 1950 season, Donovan needed a job. He didn'...

  19. Bears in Central driver's seat

The Bears' mad dash to the playoffs suddenly changed Saturday from a hectic rush-hour ordeal to a more leisurely Sunday afternoon drive. The only remaining question is where they will line up on the NFL playoff racetrack-in the front row or on the...

  21. Bears give Bucs cold shoulder

    Tribune staff reporter
The cold, hard realities of football and life were at once addressed Sunday afternoon on the frozen tundra of Soldier Field. The Bears resurrected the momentum of their remarkable season with a 27-14 defeat of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in front of 46,...

  23. Victorious Bears wear it well

    Tribune staff reporter
For the sake of locker room decorum and modesty, most of the Bears don a towel these days. On the field, however, there simply is no hiding the fact the Bears are bound for playoff glory. The Bears plastered the second-place Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26-6...
