3. 'The Master' offers a cinematic world unlike any other

Already open in New York and Los Angeles and going into general release Friday, writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson's strange, audacious drama "The Master" evokes a feverish state of mind more than a conventional movie, though its story can be described easily enough.

9. Greatest Generation's spirit may be coming back, as reflected in marathons

There was nothing tangible that made what Tom Brokaw called "The Greatest Generation" great. It was just an unidentifiable spirit.
There was nothing tangible that made what Tom Brokaw called "The Greatest Generation" great. It was just an unidentifiable spirit. I may be wrong, but I think I see signs of that spirit coming back. The St. Luke's Half Marathon, with a 13.1-mile...

11. Dow hits a record, but who's reaping the rewards?

You've heard the old joke about the stockbroker showing a friend all the luxuries he's bought with the commissions paid by his customers — big house, big car, big yacht. And the friend asks, "But where are the customers' yachts?"

13. The Amtrak fantasy

WASHINGTON -- There is something about Amtrak -- perhaps the romance of railroads or the promise of relieving traffic congestion and economizing on oil and greenhouse gas emissions -- that causes otherwise sensible people to lose contact with reality. The reality is that Amtrak is a waste of taxpayers' money and has been since its creation in 1970. It doesn't significantly reduce congestion, fuel use or greenhouse gases. Amtrak is too small to have any appreciable effect in any of these areas. Yet, Amtrak retains an aura of respectability with much of the public and many "experts," who believe it should survive and, perhaps, expand.

WASHINGTON -- Blame it on JFK.
WASHINGTON -- Blame it on JFK. Fifty years ago, President Kennedy made a decision that, with hindsight, ranks as the biggest mistake of domestic policy since World War II. In many ways, it led directly to today's "sequester" debacle. What Kennedy...
