1. Ice cream -- It's what's for winter

Defying the notion that ice cream is a treat best left to the long, hot days of summer, chefs are creating frozen desserts in flavors that are synonymous with the short, dark days of winter. Here is a sampling of such desserts to be enjoyed now — indoors, of course, where the thermostat keeps things comfy.

  3. Crime & Punishment: Man runs naked through Middletown after eating "mushroom brownie"

Though only four people were present at the latest Board of Selectmen meeting in Easton, there was still what the Easton Courier described as a "standoff" over seating. Residents John Bromer and Robert Webbe sat down at the front table but First Selectman Thomas Herrmann found it important to reserve that table for selectmen, though he was the only one there; the other two listened via conference call. The two refused to move, saying they had sat there before and the whole thing was obviously ridiculous, but relented when Herrmann called the police chief up from his office in Town Hall to threaten them with disorderly conduct charges if they didn't move to another table, according to the Courier's reporter, who was the only other person in the room. The subsequent meeting, which addressed only the renewal of a lease of land near the elementary school, lasted three minutes.

  7. Spring brings new crop of salad offerings

Unbeknown to many, including a small sampling of Chicago chefs, May is not only National Salad Month, but also the annual tribute to salads launched by the Association for Dressings and Sauces. Today, the traditional Caesar, Cobb and Waldorf salads have been pushed to the sidelines as chefs have started preparing more creative ones.

  9. Act Now: Urgent Dog Adoption Campaign at the Monroe Animal Shelter

The Town of Monroe has passed an order that instructs the town's no-kill animal shelter, which has been in business for over 12 years now, to limit housing to 29 dogs by April 30th. There are currently over 60 pets housed there. So basically, we've got to rally and get some dogs adopted or some nasty stuff is going to go down. Been thinking about getting a dog? This might be the time to do it. Check out their photos and stats online (pictured above is Roxy) at spcact.org.

  15. Clown-O-Meter: Man Who Bludgeoned His Wife to Death Could Be Awarded $2 Million of Her Assets

-Sick, Sad World: David Messenger bludgeoned his pregnant wife to death in front of their 5-year-old son in 1998, but because he was found not guilty (by reason of insanity), Messenger may get control of their $2 million in assets, including $424,627 paid out on his wife's life insurance policy, if he is released from a Middletown psychiatric hospital. The Hartford Courant also found that the son is not the beneficiary of his mother's estate due to legalities stemming from his adoption by another family.

  19. Clown-O-Meter: Derby man accidentally elected into office

    - Some disabled folks are angry over Gov. Dannel Malloy's Thanksgiving message in which he wrote of those "afflicted with handicaps that make their lives immeasurably difficult" and gave thanks for service providers who "bring them hope where maybe they have only felt hopelessness." Raymond DeBlasio of Norwich, who is blind, told the Associated Press that Malloy's wording reinforces the stereotype that the handicapped are "helpless, writhing beings that need to be cared for" and said, "When I first read it, I thought, 'Is he talking about me?'" No word on how, um, DeBlasio read it.
