1. Matt Haimovitz Performs at Silvermine Arts Center on April 14

Matt Haimovitz has done his part over the past few years to make solo cello music more accessible to the masses. He's able to manipulate his instrument to get a wide range of sounds out of it, above and beyond what is expected from a typical cellist. He'll be at the Silvermine Arts Center Sunday afternoon to present a program highlighted by a selection from the Bach Suites and repertoire by Ligeti, Tod Machover and Piazzolla.

  11. Take 2

Generally when someone is taking a snapshot, they're trying to capture a moment in time that has some kind of significance. But sometimes we end up visually freezing ordinary, unimportant moments. Artist Anca Pedvisocar has chosen some insignificant-seeming snapshots from the past century, and has recreated them in paintings for an exhibit called Take 2 at Silvermine Arts Center to give those moments a second chance. (Pictured is "The Question") Tension and solitude are two themes that crop up more than once in the show, and if you come to the reception Sunday afternoon, you can ask Pedvisocar questions about her works and the moods they convey in person.

  13. Crime & Punishment: Plow-on-Plow Violence

Five civilian employees of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London and a service member were apparently turning the academy into their own swingers club. A Coast Guard investigation found that the six were engaging in sexual activity on the job and using government computers to send each other explicit photographs. The agency denied a Freedom of Information Act request, filed by The Day newspaper, to see the full report, citing the FOI Act's privacy exemption, so we're not sure if members of the ring were having sex in groups of more than two at a time. (We'll just assume they were). Two of the civilians resigned amid the investigation and the service member was discharged.
