  3. Like/dislike: Nick Prevas

Nick Prevas is truly an “artist of all trades.” The 30-year-old Charles Village resident writes and directs films, works on graphic design projects, plays guitar and sings in the band White Lodge. He even handles communications and media for the American Visionary Arts Museum. Originally from Highland, Prevas tells b that there’s no place he’d rather be than Baltimore: “There’s just an energy to our city like no place else. I lived in L.A. for a few years and couldn’t ever get the vibe there like I can in Charm City. There’s no pretense (most of the time), you can connect with genuinely creative and talented people and there’s some weird inspiration I get from living here that just can’t be put down in words.” Through that inspiration, Prevas creates film shorts and music videos that have been shown at festivals and galleries across the country. Most recently, he co-produced a video of artist Scott Weaver showing his 100,000+ toothpick sculpture, “Rolling Through the Bay,” which you can see looping in AVAM’s current exhibition “All Things Round.” On Saturday, Prevas will perform with White Lodge at the Windup Space in a tribute to Tom Waits. Here, he talks to us about Soul Cannon (who he created album art for), his dislike for romantic comedies and the ambiguity of fanny packs.

  9. Phantom pains of racial wrongs haunt 'Zulu Fits'

The lingering effects of racism percolate through Alonzo D. LaMont Jr.'s <strong>"Zulu Fits."</strong> Although the production directed by the playwright at Heralds of Hope Theater has some rough edges, it's a thoughtful play about how young African-Americans are literally haunted by things that happened centuries ago.

  15. Sept. 6-11 in nightlife: Virgin Mobile FreeFest, The National, Incubus, new Heavy Seas seasonal

Virgin Mobile FreeFest is finally here. And unlike last year, when only High Zero conflicted with the festival, there are a ton of other things happening on Saturday. We'll have a blog post later this week on alternatives to Virgin FreeFest for Saturday. Below is what's happening elsewhere this week: besides FreeFest, Merriweather has a couple of other solid shows; so does the Ottobar; Heavy Seas will release a new seasonal beer this week; the Wham City Comedy night returns; and Metro Gallery hosts a concert photography exhibit that will feature a performance by Secret Mountains.

  17. Like/dislike: Christopher Schafer

Christopher Schafer designs three-piece suits for Ravens and Orioles as part of his eponymous tailoring business (deemed "best" by Baltimore magazine and City paper). The 39-year-old Perry Hall resident operates the Hour Haus music studio in Station North. He drums. Oh, and last year, he launched the nonprofit Baltimore Fashion Alliance. On Thursday evening, the alliance presents Fashion's Night Out, an annual celebration of fashion and shopping &mdash; originally launched in New York by Vogue's Anna Wintour &mdash; that includes tastings and events at shops, as well as a designer showcase at the InterContinental/Harbor Court Hotel. Schafer shared a few of his (many) passions with b.
