  5. Storm triggers big Howard sewage spill

Sandy knocked out power to Howard County's "water reclamation" plant in Savage, causing 20 to 25 million gallons of untreated but rain-diluted human waste to spill into the Little Patuxent River, a branch of one of the Chesapeake Bay's most degraded tributaries. County Executive Ken Ulman called the outage "unacceptable" and called for a "full audit" of how to prevent future overflows.

  15. Trip Advisor lists Ellicott City among spookiest U.S. destinations

Claims that Ellicott City is haunted are old hat. The historic mill town dates to the 1700s, is the subject of a new paranormal book and offers ghost tours. It has survived hurricanes, devastating floods, fires and hooligans - making it an ideal setting for ominous, history-infused tales.

  23. 'Richard III' plays well on an Ellicott City hill

The title character in "Richard III" qualifies as the most evil villain in any of Shakespeare's plays, which is no small accomplishment. This 15th-century English monarch killed so many members of his immediate family in his ruthless quest to ensure that nobody else sat on his throne that it's difficult to keep the bloody score.
