  1. A literary stamp to these three houses

In 1937, poet Edna St. Vincent Millay came close to refusing an honorary degree from New York University when she learned she had been excluded from a reception for male recipients of the doctorate at the Waldorf-Astoria and instead was to have a quiet dinner with the chancellor's wife.

  5. The food battle for New York's Little Italy

A family from the Midwest formed a crescent around the posted menu outside an Italian restaurant on Mulberry Street, the main (and only) drag of Manhattan's shrinking Little Italy. It didn't take long for the Latino restaurant barker &mdash; the guys who stand on the sidewalk trying to lure in the indecisive and hungry &mdash; to pounce: "<em>Ciao, bellas</em>," he said, using the Spanish plural of the Italian noun. "Come in and eat," he added, motioning with a sweep of his arm toward the open door. The family, though, thought better of it and moved on.

  13. No laughs but plenty of relevance in 'The Trojan Women'

Now is the summer of our discontent. If you'd like a little theatrical relief from all that's ailing America's body politic, Anne Bogart and SITI Company are probably not your ticket.

  15. Restaurant review: Pizza only part of the tale at Chazz

Somehow people got it into their heads that Chazz: A Bronx Original was a glorified pizza parlor. Maybe it was the pre-opening articles that documented the pizza discovery tours and fact-finding missions embarked upon by the principals involved with this flashy and thoroughly engaging new Harbor East restaurant.

  17. Patt Morrison Asks: U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis

Ahigh school counselor in La Puente once told Hilda Solis' mother that the girl really ought to forget about college and become a secretary. Well, so she has. Hilda Solis is the U.S. secretary of Labor. The daughter of factory workers and ardent union members became the first in her family to get a college education. She brought to D.C. a no-bones-about-it track record from the California Legislature, where she raised the minimum wage, raised the bar for worker protections and raised some hell for environmental laws.

  21. Critic's Notebook: 9/11-related TV programs to watch

The 10th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon arrives a week from Sunday &#8212; I don't think I need to tell you the date &#8212; and as might be expected, television is all over it. Our decimal culture encourages comment, celebration or reflection whenever 10 years go by, but there is something about this anniversary that makes it practically inescapable. It is especially inescapable, one might say, now that the death of Osama bin Laden and the upcoming dedication of a memorial that transforms the footprint of the missing Twin Towers into inverted fountains have brought the narrative that began Sept. 11, 2001, to something like a close &#8212; though there are volumes left to be written.
