Highlights
Beginnings: The first crude houses in Springs - a gem of woods, sparkling water and verdant salt meadows around Accabonac Harbor - are believed to have been built in 1649, a year after the founding of the Town of East Hampton. Tradition has it that the first families were workers from nearby Gardiners Island and squatters from New England who found the soil terrible for farming but the fishing profitable.
