Central Islip

Beginnings: In the summer of 1841, Edgar Fenn Peck, a wealthy New York doctor who had just moved to Smithtown, began the first serious exploration of the virtual wilderness of what is now Central Islip. A year later, the Long Island Rail Road arrived at what was called Suffolk Station, and the adjacent Central Islip was effectively born. For three decades, Suffolk Station depot was a rail and stagecoach center, and most of the early arrivals were of English descent or birth.
