I am sure by now you have heard about the horrible attack on CBS News correspondent Lara Logan. For years, we have watched her cover stories on the frontlines of wartorn countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. Last Friday, Logan was caught up in a mob, while covering the events in Cairo following President Hosni Mubarak's resignation. She became separated from her news team and was attacked. CBS called it a "a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating." I'm glad that she is now safe, and back home in the U.S. with her family.
A lot has been written and said this week about Logan, and other female journalists being in such a volatile setting in the first place. My reply is simply that she was there to do her job. Granted, I personally would not want to put myself in such a dangerous spot for work, or anything else. However, I am not a foreign correspondent. Logan is. That is what she does for a living. Unfortunately, that means she has to venture into some frightening situations. Let's not judge her, and say that she should or shouldn't have been there. Let's just wish her well, and hope for a speedy recovery both physically and emotionally.

Hope you enjoyed your weekend...mine was super busy! I managed to fit in the circus, a birthday party and a trip to see comedian Ron White at the Roanoke Performing Arts Theatre. So yes, I could use another day off just to rest from all that. And of course, we watched the Super Bowl last night. I only watched until the start of the third quarter, because of my early morning schedule. The half-time show is getting mixed reviews. I am a fan of the Blackeyed Peas, so I enjoyed MOST of their performance. But the performance getting the most attention is, of course, Christina Aguilera's flubbing of the national anthem. She says that she got "caught up in the moment." Now, this girl does know the lyrics. She sang the national anthem twice during last year's NBA finals. And she certainly isn't the first performer to have trouble with that song. So...I for one believe we should cut her some slack and move on. As long as she sang the song with sincerity and patriotism, that's what matters most, right?? In this age of Youtube, we become so obsessed with every mistake that a celebrity makes, whether it's performance- related, or not. I would rather spend the time watching the better commercials that aired last night...especially the cute Volkswagen ad with the Darth Vader kid. Now THAT I could watch over and over.

Can you believe it's been 25 years since the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion? Today marks the 25th anniversary. It is an event that I will never forget. Like generations before us that remember where they were when President Kennedy was shot, I remember exactly where I was. I was sitting in my 9th grade social studies class. Our teacher had brought in the TV, so that we could watch the shuttle launch. We knew would be be witnessing history, but of course, had no idea just how historic it would be. It was so horrifying, watching the shuttle go up in flames before our eyes. Even today, looking at video for this morning's story on the anniversary, I felt sick watching the video again. The emotion of events as monumental as that one just never leave you.
On a much lighter note, hope you got a chance to check out Bob's segment this morning previewing Monster Jam. I will actually be attending the show for the first time tonight, and I am excited! My son has gone before with his dad, but I am taking him tonight, along with his good buddy from school. We are prepared..with ear plugs, headphones, and hopefully, dirt-resistant clothing. But anytime I spend with Chris will be fun! Hope you enjoy your weekend, too!

It's not every day that you see a miraculous story in the news, but what we are seeing from Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is nothing short of a miracle. Less than two weeks after getting shot in the head at close range, Giffords is leaving the hospital in Tucson for a rehab center in Houston. No one would have believed that she would have SURVIVED her wound, much less, made this much progress in such a short period of time. And even though doctors warn that she might not make a 100% recovery, she has certainly astounded everyone inside and outside of the medical community. Hopefully, we'll continue having good, positive stories to report about her recovery.
Also in the news today, the unsolved Short family murders in Henry County will be featured tomorrow night on "America's Most Wanted". I can't believe it's been more than eight years since the slayings of Michael, Mary and Jennifer Short, and still no arrests. Maybe this renewed national spotlight will help police in their search for the killer.
And if you didn't get to catch my "Early Years" segment yesterday on News 7 Mornin..click over to the Mornin' page and check it out. This week we profiled the babysitting course that's offered through the Roanoke Valley chapter of the American Red Cross. It's designed for 11 to 14-year-olds to teach them how to properly handle a baby, deal with emergency situations, interview with potential employers, etc. The next class is tomorrow morning.

This winter is really starting to remind me of last year's....Yikes!!! Today was another snow day for my son, Christopher. But he was very excited to get to hang out with his grandma again. We have been going over material that Kindergartners are supposed to be tested on this week (that is, if they ever get back to class)...things like writing their first and last names with upper and lower case letters...recognizing certain "sight" words...counting backwards from 10, etc.. Try as I might, I can't remember much of anything like that from when I was in Kindergarten. Yeah, I know...it's been a LONG time. I remember writing block letters on those ditto sheets, lots of fingerpainting and taking naps on those red and blue mats.... that's about it. Kids have to be a lot more on the ball these, days, that's for sure!
My daughter Caitlin just turned two years old last Saturday. She's still a few years away from starting school. But we are about to embark upon the lovely adventure of potty training. I keep telling myself...we survived the process with Christopher...hopefully, it'll be a bit easier this time around!
