GILGO BEACH, N.Y. (PIX11)—Suffolk Police made a bombshell announcement after nearly a year of investigating the discovery of the 10 Gilgo Beach bodies: they believe this was the gruesome work of just one serial killer, not two or three as originally suspected. They also say its likely the killer is from Long Island.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer says there is enough evidence to link the 10 bodies found in the brush along Ocean Parkway to one killer. He didn't go into too much detail about forensics, but points to the commonalities - the same dumping ground, and the victims, all thought to be sex workers or related to the sex trade.
It was the search for Jersey City's Shannan Gilbert that led to the discovery of the first batch of bodies back in December 2010. Since then, investigators uncovered 10 bodies: eight women, a man, and a female toddler.
Cops think the toddler may belong to one of the women, and the man was wearing women's clothes - a possible indication of some type of involvement in the sex trade.
Interestingly, Dormer says even though Shannan Gilbert's body has never been found, they think the 24-year-old's disappearance has nothing to do with this serial killer.
Cops say they think the killer is from Long Island because while the bulk of bodies and body parts were found in Gilgo Beach, several other parts were found many miles away in Manorville and Fire Island, which cops say demonstrates a knowledge of the area.
