WILLIAM C. BENDER
A funeral service for William C. Bender, 94, of Newark, Ohio, formerly of Winchester, will be held Thursday, Dec. 21, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Rolan Taylor Funeral Home, 289 S. Main Street, Winchester. Burial will follow at Winchester Cemetery.
William was born in Detroit, Mich., June 24, 1918, to the late Charles P. and Edna May (Freeman) Bender. He died Dec. 16, 2012, at Flint Ridge Nursing Home in Newark.
William proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II as a machinist’s mate in the Pacific Theater. He worked for Timken in Detroit, Rockwell International in Newark, and Rockwell International in Winchester until his retirement in 1982. He was a deacon and member of First Presbyterian Church in Newark, Winchester Presbyterian in Winchester, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Newark, and Winchester Lions Club, where he was awarded “Lion of the Year” and received the “Outstanding Service Award.”
William enjoyed golfing, woodworking and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Faye (Klingensmith) Bender, whom he married on April 25, 1941; nephew, Robert D. (Linda) Klingensmith of Newark; nieces, Judy K. (Dave) Mead of Neenah, Wis., Deb (Joe) Bielik of Grand Rapids, Mich., Cherie (Jim) Benson of St. Clair, Mich.; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one daughter, Kris Bender in 1986, and one brother, Don Bender.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of William to the Winchester Lion’s Club.
Friends may call at Taylor Funeral Home Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday, one hour prior to the funeral service, from 10 to 11 a.m.
