Families in need of extra help this holiday season gathered at the state fairgrounds Saturday, collecting gifts from the annual Toys for Tots drive.
The nationwide drive, put on by the Marine Corps, focuses on making Christmas special for families in need.
This year thousands of families showed up in Indianapolis, where the YMCA helped fulfill wishes for toys. Each family filled out a form with their toy preferences, then picked up the toys from the volunteers.
“It truly was a blessing for our family,” Shanika Davis said.
Davis and her son, Aaron, went to collect their toys. With four kids at home, she was thankful to be able to provide the extra gifts this year.
“We just really needed the help this year. We just really appreciate everyone that gave,” Davis said.
The toys come from community donations at partners like Toys ‘R Us and Menards.
“(We want to) thank everybody in the community … that do what they do to help us out and make this possible. Without them, it really wouldn't be possible,” coordinator Staff Sgt. Brock Dienst said.
