"T.J. Hooker" star William Shatner will be the subject of Comedy Central's next celebrity roast.
The creatively titled "The Comedy Central Roast of William Shatner" will film in Los Angeles in August. Then, after the cable network has trimmed out all the naughtiest bits for the subsequent DVD release, the special will air on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 10 p.m. ET.
Joel Gallen, who also produced last year's much-discussed (in some circles at least) roast of Pamela Anderson, will produce and direct.
"It takes a real man to follow Pamela Anderson into the Roast pit and William Shatner is truly a hero among men," says Elizabeth Porter, senior vice president, specials and talent for Comedy Central. "By the end of this year's Roast, Shatner may wish he was in a galaxy far, far away."
There's a problem, though ... how will the roasters find anything in Shatner's resume to mock? The actor, who began his career on some of the classic television programs of the '50s and '60s and starred in the seminal Esperanto vehicle "Incubus," earned international renown as Captain James T. Kirk in the "Star Trek" franchise. If that was all he'd ever done, that would probably be enough for a roast, but Shatner has also written a series of "TekWar" books, recorded the seminal version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" and earned a pair of Emmys for his work on "The Practice" and "Boston Legal."
Shatner can also currently be heard in the animated hit comedy "Over the Hedge."
Earlier this week, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced that Shatner will be inducted into the group's Hall of Fame.
