Grant and troops

From Fort Defiance, then Colonel, US Grant was able to launch raids down the river, keeping confederate forces at bay, insuring that this crucial transportation corridor remained open to Union convoys. From this vitally strategic point, armies could transport troops, equipment and supplies up and down the Ohio River valley and hold Confederate forces in Missouri west of the great Mississippi river.
