( October 11, 2012 ) Viewed mostly in split-screen, with extensive footage of muddy hippies sloshing around interspersed with now-iconic performances from Ritchie Havens, Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, Santana and many others, this Michael Wadleigh-directed sensory overload (editing by, among others, Martin Scorsese) runs a little long. But it plays as the definitive cultural document of the 60s counter-culture high point before the wave broke, spilling wild-eyed, acid-head boomers into the 70s and beyond. |
